John trained at Lincoln School of Art and at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London where he was awarded a Diploma in Art and Design with honours in 1968. This led to a career in educational publishing working for the BBC and The Open University and a variety of freelance clients.

In his paintings, he aims to evoke strong feelings of light, atmosphere, and place and is especially drawn to land and seascape subjects around the reed-beds and estuaries of Norfolk and Suffolk. One such painting, ‘Beach Huts at Southwold’, was awarded a prize in the Leisure Painter category of the 2004 Pitchings Art Festival – a national competition organised by The Leisure Painter and The Artist magazines.
